S4E3: Love, Laugh, Lobster: A Valentine’s Day Special

Love ❤️, Laugh , Lobster : A Valentine’s Day Special

What do goat sacrifices, medieval poetry, and candy hearts have in common? They’re all part of Valentine’s Day history. In the latest episode of Are You Sh!tting Me?, Aaron and Brett uncover the origins of February 14th and laugh their way through romantic traditions, both ancient and modern.

Valentine’s Day Through the Ages

The episode starts with a history lesson—but this isn’t the sugary tale you’ve heard before. Did you know:

  • The original Valentine’s Day involved a Roman fertility festival called Lupercalia, featuring goat sacrifices and “fertility lashings”?
  • St. Valentine secretly married couples in defiance of the Roman Emperor, inspiring the holiday we know today.
  • Geoffrey Chaucer’s love poems popularized the romantic connections we now associate with Valentine’s Day in the 1300s.

From there, Valentine’s Day evolved into a global phenomenon. Brett even found out it’s the most popular day for engagements, with 6 million couples popping the question annually!

Candy Hearts and Cash Flow

Nothing screams Valentine’s quite like candy hearts. But here’s the scoop:

  • Candy hearts date back to 1886 when a pharmacist invented a machine to print messages like “Be Mine” and “How Are You?”
  • Today, rare vintage candy hearts can sell for hundreds of dollars on eBay—just don’t try to eat them.

Valentine’s Day is also a massive industry. Americans alone spend $26 billion on chocolate, flowers, jewelry, and cards annually. Fun fact: 1% of Americans call it their favorite holiday—about the same number who probably like candy corn.

“Love Letters from Hell” by Abomination Brewing

This week’s featured beer is a sweet treat with a dark twist. Love Letters from Hell, brewed by Abomination Brewing Company, is a milkshake IPA bursting with flavors of candy hearts, marshmallows, and vanilla. Brett and Aaron agree—it’s one of the best they’ve ever had.

Looking to try it yourself? Find it in North Haven, Connecticut, or check your local craft beer shops for a taste of Valentine’s decadence.

Our Awkward Valentine’s Day Stories

Aaron and Brett share their funniest Valentine’s memories, including:

  • The $150 lobster dinner that blew Aaron’s budget.
  • Awkward elementary school moments with Valentine’s cards (and who got the “heart” design).
  • Why staying home is often the best option for Valentine’s Day celebrations.

Valentine’s Traditions From Around the World

Think February 14 is the only day for romance? Think again. Did you know:

  • Japan celebrates White Day a month later, where men return gifts to women who gave them chocolates.
  • In South Korea, singles celebrate “Black Day” in April with bowls of black noodles.
  • A not-so-official holiday called Steak and Blowjob Day takes place on March 14 (you can thank Brett for sharing that tidbit).
